Project Summary
1️⃣ What Did I Do?
In this project, I took on various roles, from planning and development to launch and post-release updates.
Our team, Jellysis, released this game!
We initially aimed to release the game on AppLab, but due to frame rate considerations, we decided to launch it on the OnStove platform instead.
Additionally, we had the opportunity to showcase the game at multiple exhibitions, gathering feedback from nearly 600 users.
We also analyzed user data to continuously improve the game.
What I did well👍
- This was my first time collaborating with professionals from different fields (design, research, etc.), and I learned how to distribute tasks and manage a structured workflow.
- Although the game appeared to be a simple rhythm game, we focused on user experience, refining gameplay mechanics to enhance player engagement.
- I gained hands-on experience in analyzing user data, adjusting UI and interaction elements, and implementing updates based on real feedback.
- I explored and applied performance optimization techniques such as Pooling, Caching, music streaming, graphics optimization, and Light Baking.
Challenges🔥
- Collaboration across different disciplines required clear communication and documentation.
To avoid misunderstandings, we made it a habit to record and share all discussions and decisions. - We initially introduced a new rhythm game mechanic called “tearing”, but through pilot testing, we realized that the two-step interaction was not intuitive.
We ultimately decided to remove and redesign the feature. - Since frame drops are critical in rhythm games, we actively worked on performance optimization to ensure a smooth gameplay experience.
- Through multiple exhibitions, we collected user behavior data and conducted surveys, using the insights to adjust UI layouts and interaction methods in post-launch updates.
2️⃣ What Did I Learn?
- I experienced the entire game development cycle, from planning to release and ongoing updates, gaining insight into the importance of long-term game maintenance.
- Clear communication and documentation are essential – Verbal instructions alone can lead to misunderstandings, so keeping detailed records of meetings and decisions is crucial.
- For a long-term project to succeed, team members must align their goals and values, and continuous motivation is key to sustaining progress.
- I learned how to use user data to drive improvements and updates, reinforcing that game development is an ongoing process that extends beyond the initial launch.
3️⃣ How Can I Improve?
- Further research on performance optimization
- I aim to improve my skills in frame rate optimization so the game can run smoothly on platforms like AppLab.
- Enhance UX research and testing processes
- Implementing a structured testing system will help minimize trial and error when introducing new features.
- Develop a long-term strategy for game operation and updates
- Understanding post-launch maintenance and improvement strategies will be crucial for keeping the game engaging over time.
